Gouache on Arches Watercolor Paper - 3.9”x9.8”
For this painting, I decided to experiment with a style that was a bit different from my usual approach. My paintings are typically flat, but this time, I embraced that flatness and leaned into it even more. I began by blocking in the background and layering leafy patterns on top. Instead of blending a wide range of colors for a realistic effect, I chose to limit myself to just a few hues, aiming for a more graphic, yet still artistic, feel. Adding small details like dots and loose leaves can really liven a painting, so I incorporated that into the piece.
Next, I began adding the basic colors for the flowers. The indigo flowers required a lot of variation in both color and value, but the other flowers didn’t need as much. I made sure not to overwork them or add unnecessary depth. Sometimes, it's more effective to create the illusion of detail rather than adding every little detail—this approach ends up being more appealing to look at.
Here is the final result!
